M5 gives a broader thread than M3 or M4, making it easier to handle in mid-size assemblies while still being suitable for careful cut-to-length use. PTFE offers low friction, electrical insulation and broad chemical compatibility in suitable environments. It is not as rigid as metal, so the design should allow for plastic thread behaviour.
